Understanding Your Tire

The side of a tire contains information needed for your safety. Being able to read sidewall markings will help you better understand the performance of each tire and it also provides your tire dealer with information when mounting and servicing the tire.

There are three primary sizing systems for passenger tires today: P-Metric, European Metric and Millimetric. The numbers on your tire actually give a description of that particular tire such as the example below:

P215/65R15 P215/65R 95S

A speed rating is sometimes placed in front of the “R”. A straight “R” means it is basically rated for speeds up to 106 mph. Other speed ratings are S=112 mph, T=118 mph, H=130 mph, V=149 mph and a Z rated tire is rated for speeds in excess of 149 mph. However, it should be noted that exceeding the lawful speed limit is neither recommended nor endorsed. The V and Z rated tires have excellent dry pavement grip/traction, but due to their soft rubber compounds, do not have a long life.

Uniform Tire Quality Grade Labeling

Each tire manufacturer performs its own tests in the areas of treadwear, traction, and temperature, following government-prescribed test procedures. Each manufacturer then assigns grades that are branded on the tire. Example:

Treadwear 300 Traction AA Temperature A

Treadwear ratings indicate an approximate tire life. It’s important to remember that the actual life of any tire is influenced by the road surface quality, driving habits, inflation pressure, wheel alignment, weather conditions, vehicle type and tire rotation.

Traction rating grades indicate a locked tire’s braking ability in a straight line on a wet road surface. Traction grades ranger from AA, A, B C, with AA being the best.

Temperature grades represent a properly maintained tire’s ability to dissipate heat under controlled indoor test conditions. Temperature grades range from A to C, with A being the best.

There are also other markings such as “M & S” or “M/S” which indicate that the tire meets the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) definition of a mud and snow tire.

Also included on the tire wall will be “Max. Load” and “Max. Press.” indicating the maximum load for which the tire is rated and the maximum tire pressure .
